In view of a rapidly growing world population and its increasing consumption needs, the extraction of mineral raw materials is leading to ever greater ecological, economic, political and social problems with global implications. Above all, unsustainable mining practices result in massive burdens that pose enormous challenges to present and future generations. The exhibition “MAN & MINING”, developed by the Völklinger Hütte in cooperation with the Museum der Arbeit, uses various artistic positions to show the conditions of current resource extraction and its consequences
for people working in mining, especially in the Global South. Art installations, photographic and video works by the artists’ collective Unknown Fields, Danny Franzreb, Johnny Haglund, Pieter Hugo, Lu Guang, Andrea Mancini, Lisa Rave, Sebastião Salgado and Gabriella Torres-Ferrer, create a worldwide panorama ranging from historical deep drilling to utopian thoughts for the future. The aim of the exhibition is to connect the asymmetries of global resource extraction and the concrete consequences for people in the Global South with a discussion of our consumer behavior.
