Formation of the Warehouse District

Permanent exhibition in the Warehouse District Museum

A lot of space is dedicated to the history of how the Warehouse District was planned and built. It all began in 1881 when the contract to join the German Customs Union was signed. In addition to photos of the Customs Union celebrations, you can also see the freshly crowned Emperor Wilhelm II on his ceremonial visit to Hamburg on 29 October 1888, and the original finely engraved bricklayer’s trowel which the monarch used to lay the keystone to celebrate Hamburg’s new membership in the German customs territory.
