There are currently 20 seaports and around 100 public inland ports in Germany. They transport goods, raw materials, people, animals, plants and knowledge along complex global trade routes. Ports are driving forces behind economic developments, hubs of freight transport, and places of exchange and encounter. They foster a sense of identity and inspire popular imagination. To understand the role of ports in the present and future, it is worth exploring their fascinating history.
