About Johann Kontor

In 2015, the firm Aug. Prien was awarded the contract to implement the project as part of the “Quartier am Klosterwall” issued by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The architectural firm KPW Papay Warncke und Partner emerged as the winner of a two-phase urban planning and architectural design competition featuring 29 international and national participants.

In the area of the historic walls in downtown Hamburg, a mixed-use neighborhood was created that forms the eastern boundary of the Kontorhaus district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main train station, the Alster, the Elbe, HafenCity, and the central shopping streets are all within walking distance.

By reinterpreting the architectural features of a Kontorhaus in a modern design, a distinctive, large-scale urban block was created that blends harmoniously into the historic Kontorhaus district.

The building is divided into three sections: The northern section houses a 4-star hotel with 227 rooms, a conference area, and a public restaurant. The central section contains approximately 146 rental apartments, a third of which are subsidized.

In addition, a daycare center with outdoor facilities on the roof, retail spaces, and rooms for cultural use were created.

The southern section of the building is primarily dedicated to office space, along with retail and dining areas. The building was completed in the summer of 2024. Since August 2024, AUG. PRIEN Invest has been responsible for asset management at the Johann Kontor.

A new highlight for Hamburg’s cultural scene

The “Kultur Kontor Hamburg,” located in the newly built “Johann Kontor,” adds nearly 700 square meters of space to the diverse range of exhibitions along the Klosterwall and Hamburg’s Art Mile.

Starting in the summer of 2026, Stiftung Historische Museen Hamburg (SHMH), in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Media and the container logistics company Maersk, will utilize the area located between the Deichtorhallen Hamburg and the Hamburger Kunsthalle, and across from the Kunsthaus Hamburg and the Markthalle Hamburg, to offer a diverse program of exhibitions and events to Hamburg’s residents and visitors from around the world.
