Located in the immediate vicinity of the Altona Museum, MOTTE is not only one of the first but also one of Germany’s most influential socio-cultural centers, offering a wide range of artistic, social, sustainable, and cultural activities for all age groups. To mark the center’s 50th anniversary, the Altona Museum is presenting an anniversary exhibition that has been prepared and designed in collaboration with MOTTE employees. The exhibition presents three generations of activists who, against the backdrop of the respective social situation, repeatedly developed innovative new approaches to socio-cultural work. MOTTE was founded in the mid-1970s out of a desire to organize social participation, education, and creativity in the district in a self-organized manner. In 1976, the “Association for Neighborhood-Based Cultural and Social Work” was officially founded. Since then, MOTTE has continued to evolve: from its first workshops to children’s and youth work, media and inclusion projects, international encounters, cultural education for all generations, and a diverse program of events.
